American think tank criticizes Pakistan for internet ban

امریکا کے معروف ٹیکنالوجی تھنک ٹینک کے نائب صدر ڈینیئل کاسترو کا کہنا ہے کہ انٹرنیٹ پر پابندی پاکستان کو معاشی طور پر مہنگی پڑ سکتی ہے۔
پاکستان میں امریکی سفارت خانے میں گزشتہ روز ہونے والی صحافیو ں سے گفتگو میں انہوں نے کہا کہ یہ پابندیاں مختصر مدت کے لیے سیاسی طاقت فراہم کر سکتی ہیں لیکن طویل مدتی معاشی عدم استحکام کا باعث بن سکتی ہیں۔
انہوں نے ملک کی خود مختاری کو تسلیم کرتے ہوئے یہ سوال اٹھایا کہ جو ممالک یہ فیصلہ کررہے ہیں ان کا مقصد کیا ہے اور کیا وہ طویل المدتی مفادات پر قلیل مدتی مفادات کو ترجیح دے رہے ہیں؟
ڈینیئل کاسترو کا کہنا ہے کہ انٹرنیٹ شٹ ڈاؤن کےحق میں زیادہ تر دلائل یہ ہیں کہ یہ مختصر مدت کے سیاسی استحکام کے لیے اچھا ہے، لیکن میرا ماننا ہے کہ جو معاشی استحکام انٹرنیٹ شٹ ڈاؤن نہ ہونے سے حاصل ہو گا وہ کسی بھی مختصر مدت کے فوائد سے کہیں زیادہ ہے۔
انہوں نے کہا کہ کچھ حدود ہونی چاہئیں، بالکل اسی طرح جیسے آپ وہ تمام راستے بند نہیں کر سکتے جن سے کسی قسم کا نقصاندہ مواد آ رہا ہو۔
خیال رہے کہ ڈینیئل کاسترو کے یہ ریمارکس پاکستان میں انٹرنیٹ سنسر شپ کے پسِ منظر کے خلاف سامنے آئے ہیں۔
ان کے مطابق تجارت اور ڈیجیٹل خدمات واضح طور پر پاکستان کے اہم شعبوں میں سے ایک ہیں لیکن انٹرنیٹ کی بندش چاہے وہ منٹ، گھنٹے یا دن کے لیے ہی کیوں نہ ہو مخصوص خدمات کو متاثر کر رہی ہے۔
انٹرنیٹ سینسر شپ سے پاکستان میں فری لانسرز اور آن لائن ورکرز کو مشکلات کا سامنا کرنا پڑ رہا ہے۔

Daniel Castro, the vice president of a well-known American technology think tank, says that banning the Internet may cost Pakistan economically.
Speaking to reporters at the US Embassy in Pakistan yesterday, he said that these sanctions may provide short-term political strength but may lead to long-term economic instability.
While recognizing the sovereignty of the country, he raised the question that what is the purpose of the countries that are making this decision and are they prioritizing short-term interests over long-term interests?
Daniel Castro says that most of the arguments in favor of shutting down the Internet are that it is good for short-term political stability, but I believe that the economic stability that would come from not shutting down the Internet is any short-term. The benefits are more than that.
There have to be some limits, he said, just like you can’t block all the avenues through which some kind of harmful content is coming.
It should be noted that these remarks of Daniel Castro have come against the backdrop of internet censorship in Pakistan.
According to him, commerce and digital services are clearly one of the key sectors in Pakistan, but internet outages, whether for minutes, hours or days, are affecting certain services.
