Protest by Pakistan kisan Committee, Labor Education Foundation
لاہور:پاکستان کسان رابطہ کمیٹی اور لیبر ایجوکیشن فاؤنڈیشن نے پریس کلب کے باہر احتجاجی مظاہرہ کیا اور پاکستان کے لئے فوری قرضوں کی منسوخی کا مطالبہ کیا۔ یہ مظاہرہ واشنگٹن میں آئی ایم ایف اور ورلڈ بینک کے سالانہ اجلاس کے وقت پر کیا گیا۔ان اجلاسوں میں بینکوں، وزرائے خزانہ، پارلیمنٹیرینز، نجی شعبے کے ایگزیکٹوز، سول سوسائٹی تنظیموں کے نمائندگان اور دیگر ماہرین غربت کے خاتمے، اقتصادی ترقی اور امداد کی موثریت سمیت عالمی تشویش کے امور پر تبادلہ خیال کریں گے۔پاکستان کسان رابطہ کمیٹی کے جنرل سیکرٹری فاروق طارق کا کہنا تھا کہ2022 کے تباہ کن سیلاب سے بڑے پیمانے پر جانی ومالی نقصانات پر غور کیے بغیر آئی ایم ایف کی جانب سے پاکستان پر عائد شرائط پر سختی سے عمل درآمد کیا گیا ہے۔ 40 لاکھ سے زائد افراد اب بھی سڑک کے کنارے قائم کیمپوں میں رہتے ہیں اور لاکھوں بچے اب بھی پینے کے صاف پانی سے محروم ہیں۔انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ ہمیں اب قرضوں کی منسوخی کی ضرورت ہے تاکہ ہماری حکومت کو پاکستان کے قرضوں کی ادائیگی یا غربت، بھوک اور موسمیاتی تبدیلی سے لڑنے میں سے کسی ایک کا انتخاب نہ کرنا پڑے۔مظاہرین نے فوسل فیول کے منصوبوں سے متعلق قرضوں کی منسوخی کا بھی مطالبہ کیا۔ ایشین پیپلز موومنٹ آن ڈیٹ اینڈ ڈیولپمنٹ کے کنٹری پروگرام منیجر ضیغم عباس نے کہا کہ،آئی ایم ایف اور عالمی بینک کی جانب سے کوئلے، تیل اور گیس کے اخراج اور عالمی جنوب میں بنیادی ڈھانچے کے منصوبوں کے لیے قرضے گرین ہاؤس گیسوں کے اخراج میں اضافے اور موسمیاتی تبدیلی کو تیز کرنے میں کردار ادا کر رہے ہیں۔ ان منصوبوں کے نتیجے میں جبری نقل مکانی، ذریعہ معاش کا نقصان اور ماحولیاتی نظام کی تباہی ہوئی ہے، سماجی عدم مساوات میں اضافہ ہوا ہے اور عالمی جنوب کے ممالک میں غربت کے چکر کو برقرار رکھا ہے۔
Lahore:activists from Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee and Labor Education foundation staged a protest outside Press Club demanding “deep, wide and urgent debt cancellation” for Pakistan. The demonstration was organized amid the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Washington. The meetings bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development, parliamentarians, private sector executives, representatives from civil society organizations and academics to discuss issues of global concern, including the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development, and aid effectiveness.
Farooq Tariq, General Secretary Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee said IMF conditionalities imposed on Pakistan have been strictly enforced without considering the massive loss of life, livelihoods and public funds from the devastating floods of 2022. Over 4 million people still reside in roadside camps, and millions of children are still without access to safe drinking water.
“The IMF and the WB persist in pushing loans as the answer to multiple crises but the solutions they promote have only contributed to worsening the debt problem. We need debt cancellation now so that our government does not have to make a choice between servicing Pakistan’s debts or fighting poverty, hunger and climate change,” he pointed out.
The protesters also called for the cancellation of debts related to fossil fuel projects. Zaighum Abbas, country program manager of Asian People’s Movement on Debt and Development said, “The IMF and WB’s lending for coal, oil, and gas extraction and infrastructure projects across the Global South is contributing to increasing greenhouse gas emissions and accelerating climate change. These projects in turn have caused forced displacement, loss of livelihoods, and destruction of ecosystems, exacerbating social inequalities and perpetuating cycles of poverty and vulnerability in the Global South.”
Similar protests were held across Asia in different countries, protesting the IMF-WB policies that drive debt issues in global south.
