Columbia University president who stopped student protest against Israel resigns

یونیورسٹی سربراہ نے استعفے سے متعلق اپنے خط میں لکھا ہے کہ مختلف اور اہم شعبوں میں ان کے زمانے میں ترقی ہوئی تاہم ان کا دور ایک طرح سے بحرانی دور رہا جیسا کہ اس عرصے میں پورے ملک میں احتجاج چل رہا تھا۔
انہوں نے اس امر کو تسلیم کیا کہ یونیورسٹی کیمپیس کے اندر احتجاج ہی بالآخر ان کے استعفے کا سبب بنا ہے، اس دوران ان کے خاندان کو بھی کافی نقصان پہنچایا گیا۔ انہوں نے کہا میں موسم گرما کے شروع سے اس فیصلے کی طرف بڑھ رہی تھی، میرا یہ فیصلہ کولمبیا کو آنے والے چیلنجوں سے نمٹنے کے قابل بنائے۔
اپریل میں مینوشے نے نیویارک پولیس کو کیمپس میں داخلے کی اجازت دی تھی، یونیورسٹی میں اسرائیل مخالف مظاہرے پر تقریباً 100 طلبہ گرفتار ہوئے تھے، یہ 5 دہائیوں بعد کولمبیا یونیورسٹی میں بڑے پیمانے پر ہونے والی گرفتاریاں تھیں، اس اقدام سے امریکا اور کینیڈا کے درجنوں کالجز میں احتجاج شروع ہوا تھا۔

The head of the university has also been forced to resign. Columbia University president Manouche Shafiq, who stopped student protests against Israel, has resigned.
The head of the university wrote in his resignation letter that there was progress in various and important fields during his time, but his tenure was a kind of crisis period as protests were going on throughout the country during that period.
He admitted that the protest within the university campus was what ultimately led to his resignation, during which his family suffered a lot. “I have been moving towards this decision since the beginning of the summer, my decision will enable Colombia to meet the challenges ahead,” she said.
In April, Manouche allowed New York police to enter the campus, arresting nearly 100 students at an anti-Israel demonstration at the university, the largest such arrest at Columbia University in five decades, the move by the U.S. and Canada. Protests started in dozens of colleges.
