Malaysia: Dozens missing after migrant boat capsizes, 7 bodies recovered

According to officials, the survivors include three Myanmar nationals, two Rohingya and a Bangladeshi national. State news agency Bernama quoted Kedah police chief Aziz Abu Shah as saying that all the passengers were heading towards Malaysia.
Initial investigations have revealed that as the large boat approached the Malaysia-Thailand border, the smugglers transferred the passengers to three smaller boats, each carrying about 100 people, to avoid detection by authorities.
Officials say Rohingya and other migrants often take dangerous sea routes to escape Myanmar, where they face statelessness, discrimination and persecution.
